The trope of judicial inbalance in the United States has found its way into many books over the decades, both fiction and non-fiction, and will never cease to be relevant until the prejudices toward black people in the American penal system are long gone. Tayari Jones’ novel follows a black couple’s life as the husband gets accused of a crime he did not commit, but the crime-aspect of the book is only the background to a heartwrenching story of familial loyalty, responsibility and betrayal. The all-black cast of the book gives voice to a thousand contemporary themes which one can ignore only at their own expense.

Josh Malerman: Bird Box
One of the most original horror stories of the decade, coming from the singer/songwriter turned novelist Josh Malerman. Malorie and her children live in a world where an unknown evil has taken over humanity. Nobody knows where it comes from, what it wants and how it looks. For looking at „it” means to lose one’s mind, and instantly go on a suicidal rampage. Going up against the total, inexorable evil while having to wear blindfolds all the time? One can hardly imagine so daunting and hopeless a task. Malerman’s musical background and natural talent for rythm doubtless helped him creating such a vivid narrative that primarly relies on the auditory sensations of its protagonist.
