Andrew Sean Greer: Less

Gillian Flynn: Sharp Objects

This is the first novel from the author of Gone Girl, the international best seller that was adapted into a box office hit in 2014. Written some six years previously, Sharp Objects already bears all the marks of a master storyteller, and an author who could inject some fresh blood into the psychological thriller scene, which, at times, seems overflowing with mediocrity. It is a book from the overgrown crossroads of the physical and the psychological, of present and past dangers which have an all too real bearing on each other. The HBO-produced miniseries starring Amy Adams has propelled this decade-old masterpiece to the top boxes of the best sellers lists.

A Holtodiglan című bestseller szerzőjének első regényét az HBO által készített sorozat repítette ismét a sikerlisták élére, egyáltalán nem érdemtelenül. Már ebből a 2006-ban írt regényből is élesen kiviláglik, hogy az írónő képes vérfrissítést hozni a pszichológiai thrillerek sokszor középszerűségbe süllyedő szcénájába. A történet főhőse bizonytalan léptekkel kénytelen áthaladni a jelen hús-vér valóságának és a múlt pszichológiai traumáinak keresztútján, és rá kell döbbennie, hogy a szülővárosára vetülő árnyékok egy részét ő maga veti. A depresszió, a szülő-gyermek kapcsolatok és az érzelmi elfojtás súlyos témáit nem minden nap láthatjuk ilyen sikeresen beleágyazni egy feszes tempójú thrillerbe.

Shari Lapena: A Stranger in the House

Its quick pace and constant erosion of our previously accumulated suppositions set this book apart. At first it seems to be yet another amnesia-driven storyline, only to be slowly turning into something much more sinister and thrilling. While creating strangely unlikeable central characters, Shari Lapena makes us continually question our willingness to root for them. And by traversing through the ever-thickening plot, we gradually realize that when reading suspense stories, we care much more about the solution to the central problem than the personality traits of its victims. Stranger in the House is on its way to repeat the success of its author’s 2016 hit, The Couple Next Door.

A szomszéd pár című sikerkönyv után Shari Lapena nem lassított le. Legújabb regényének felütése csak első pillantásra kúszik bele „a főszereplő hirtelen amnéziája” által uralt klisébe, az oldalakat falva a hasonló felütésekkel dolgozó könyveknél sokkal sötétebb és viharosabb vizekre evezünk.
A könyv érdekessége, hogy főszereplőit csak jókora túlzással nevezhetjük rokonszenvesnek. Főleg a kissé egoista, öncentrikus férj alakja válik oldalról oldalra ellenszenvesebbé. Így aztán lassan ráérzünk, hogy a könyv középpontjában álló rejtély megoldása a történet valódi főszereplője, amely a karakterek személyiségétől függetlenül – vagy annak ellenére – ejti rabul a kíváncsiságunkat.
