Heather Morris: The Tattooist of Auschwitz
Based on a true story, the book recounts the story of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian man deported to Auschwitz in 1942, who became the one responsible for tattooing the identification number of his fellow prisoners into their arms. After branding her, Lale falls in love with a young girl named Gita, and uses his privileged position in the camp to try and help both of them survive their captivity. A heart-wrenching tale about the power of true love, and its capacity to overcome the deepest horrors mankind can inflict on itself.
Az Osztrák-Magyar Monarchia területén született, szlovák származású Lale Sokolov igaz történetén alapuló regény Auschwitz halálgyárába vezeti el az olvasót. Heather Morris azonban nem a tábor mindennapjait meghatározó terror és elkeseredettség érzékletes bemutatására, hanem az ezeken felülkerekedni képes szerelem hatalmára helyezi a hangsúlyt. A szerző elsősorban forgatókönyvíró, így a prózai elemek és a környezet leírása háttérbe szorul az elfojtott érzelmektől feszülő dialógusok mögött.
Tom Hanks: Uncommon Type
Publishing a series of short stories as a Hollywood superstar is bound to be easy and difficult at the same time. On the one hand, very few publishers would be averse to come out with a book that is destined to sell well, based on the sheer popularity of its author. On the other, the amount of attention it gets also opens it up for harsh criticism and vitriol. Tom Hanks, however, was shielded from the latter by his talent, empathy and charisma that translates surprisingly well on the page.

Hans Rosling: Factfulness
As Christopher Hitchens once put it: “it’s amazing how relaxing it is not to pretend to know more than you do.” This socratic attitude is highly and effectively encouraged by Hans Rosling’s book, which points out the surprisingly large number of biases and primordial instincts we display during any given conversation, and how we usually try and hide our own ignorance on a subject by inserting into our speech fictitious data we have just come up with. Also, similarly to Steven Pinker’s book, Enlightenment Now, Factfulness shows that the world around us is much more habitable than we might be inclined to think.
Hans Rosling utolsó könyve, amelyen egészen halála pillanatáig dolgozott, érzékletesen és tényszerűen mutatja be, hogy mindennapi életünkben milyen önvédelmi mechanizmusok és beszédaktusok segítségével próbáljuk elkendőzni saját tudatlanságunkat. Steven Pinker Az erőszak alkonya című könyvéhez hasonlóan pedig arra is ügyesen mutat rá, hogy a világ, amiben élünk, sokkal jobb hely, mint amennyire azt a naponta ránk zúduló hírfolyam és saját elfogult véleményünk látni engedi.
