Whether it’s fiction, politics, history, or science, Libri is keeping a keen eye on what’s trending in the world. Based on the well-renowned best sellers lists of The New York Times, each month we are assembling a selection of those books which claim their prominent positions, and which we believe will capture the imagination of Hungarian readers as well as expatriates and travelers staying in the country.

Rupi Kaur: home body

Rupi Kaur is one of the first mainstream writers who rose to fame from the social media platforms tumblr and Instagram. She is the living proof that while it is easy to see social media as the hotbed of fake news and shallow exhibitionism, it can also provide genuinely talented people with the means of publishing their art. home body is a beautiful continuation of Kaur’s previous books of self-reflective and meditative poetry, milk and honey and the sun and her flowers, which garnered her international fame.

Jeff Kinney: Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Adventure

Rowley Jefferson is writing a fantasy book with his friend, Greg. While Rowley is focusing on making the story work, Greg is preoccupied by the changes they should make if they want to sell it to a big movie studio. The second instalment in Jeff Kinney’s spinoff series to his world-famous wimpy kid diaries does several tricks at once. First, it works as a children’s book, either to be read by kids on their own, or listening to their parents’ rendition of it. Secondly, it touches issues which can be appreciated by grown-ups as well: questions of artistic freedom, commercialising art, environmental challenges and many more.

Stephen King: The Institute

Luke Evans is kidnapped by strangers in the middle of the night, taken to a mysterious location, and held there along with other children, who, like him, have supernatural abilities. If they want to survive, the kids need to work together, but also need to make sacrifices which may prove too much for them. Stephen King’s work of the past ten years has been showered with less than favourable criticism, his latest book, however, left both his fans and critics speechless. Some aspects of The Institute show a return to King’s early tropes, while it also sports some fresh and genuinely original ideas.

Cixin Liu: The Three-Body Problem

After its English translation was published, the sci-fi trilogy Remembrance of Earth’s Past has taken the United States by storm, and its first book, The Three-Body Problem won the Hugo Award for Best Novel, the first Chinese book to do so. Now the novel’s popularity has reached new heights after the announcement that Netflix was preparing a series based on the trilogy, with the showrunners of Game of Thrones at the helm. But the novel’s popularity is well-deserved in its own right, as it is a wonderfully refreshing deviation from the western tropes permeating the sci-fi genre.

Angol fordításának megjelenését követően a kínai Cixin Liu scifi-sorozata, A háromtest-trilógia a nyugati világot is rabul ejtette. Nyitóepizódja, A háromtest-probléma Az első kínai könyv volt, ami elnyerte a legjobb regénynek járó Hugo-díjat. A legszélesebb közönség látókörébe azonban akkor került, amikor a Netflix bejelentette, hogy sorozatot készít a trilógiából, adaptálásával pedig a Trónok harca-sorozatot is jegyző David Benioff—D. B. Weiss alkotópárost bízta meg. Nemcsak ezért érdemes azonban elolvasni a könyveket: a trilógia egészen újszerű perspektívákat nyújt a nyugati típusú sci-fikhez képest.

Matt Ruff: Lovecraft Country

Since the rekindling of racial issues in the United States, more and more historical figures’ legacy is revisited and shed a new light on, based on the socio-political views they held. H. P. Lovecraft, the visionary father of the modern horror genre held overtly racist views, which, even in his own lifetime, have raised quite a few eyebrows. Matt Ruff’s interconnected short stories take us through Lovecraft’s world both literally and figuratively: they tell the story of a young black man trying to find his father, who was kidnapped in New England, while encountering nightmarish creatures, both human and supernatural.

Ilyen H. P. Lovecraft, a modern horrorirodalom atyja is, akinek nézetei már saját – a rasszizmust sokkal elnézőbben kezelő – korában is rengeteg homlokra vontak ráncokat. Matt Ruff könyve, ami szorosan összekapcsolódó novellák formájában válik egységes történetté, szintén erre a kérdésre keresi a választ: szerethetjük-e Lovecraft történeteit anélkül, hogy egyetértenénk vele ideológiai kérdésekben. A könyv, miközben bemutatja a borzalmat, amit Lovecraft nézeteinek gyakorlati megvalósulása jelent, kalapot emel a szerző képzelőereje és írói teljesítménye előtt.
