Whether it’s fiction, politics, history, or science, Libri is keeping a keen eye on what’s trending in the world. Based on the well-renowned best sellers lists of The New York Times, each month we are assembling a selection of those books which claim their prominent positions, and which we believe will capture the imagination of Hungarian readers as well as expatriates and travelers staying in the country.

Ernest Cline: Ready Player Two

Many fans of the first book – and there are many – questioned whether the compact and rounded plot of Ready Player One really called for a sequel. In this day and age when fantasy and sci-fi sagas default at a minimum of three weighty tomes, it was refreshing to see a world built up, then filled with relatable characters and a thrilling story compressed into a few hundred pages. Nevertheless, the second part is here, this time with the fate of the entire human species at stake. The pacing is a bit slower, while there’s even more nerding out over 80s pop-culture references, but Ready Player Two is sure to glue fans of the first book to their seats.

Walter Tevis: The Queen’s Gambit

This 1983 masterpiece was drawn into the centre of attention after its remarkably well-executed adaptation as a miniseries came out on Netflix. Although some may be intimidated by a book so tightly wrapped in the world of chess – a game most of us only know the very basics of, and can only marvel at the intellectual accomplishments of its top players – the lay person needn’t worry. Both the book and the series manage to avoid getting overly technical about chess, and keep the focus on the idiosyncratic personality of Beth, the protagonist, and her extraordinary journey of healing and self-discovery.

A Netflix által képernyőre adaptált, eredetileg 1983-ban megjelent regény elsőre talán sokakat eltántorít, amikor kiderül, milyen mélyen áthatja a történetet a sakk – laikusok számára általában felfoghatatlanul bonyolult – világa. A legtöbben az alaplépéseknél alig tudunk többet erről az ősi játékról, és ámulva hallgatjuk a nagymesterek teljesítményét köznapi nyelvre lefordító beszámolókat. Szerencsére azonban mind a könyv, mint pedig a belőle készült sorozat mesterien kerüli el a játék technikai részleteinek túlhangsúlyozását, és a történet fókusza mindvégig Beth, a főszereplő különleges személyiségén, a szülei elvesztésével rátörő elveszettség-érzésen, majd a valódi életbe visszavezető sötét, kanyargós és zegzugos ösvényeken marad.

Douglas Stuart: Shuggie Bain

Winner of the 2020 Booker Prize, Shuggie Bain is a grim and gripping story of a boy coming of age in Thatcher-era Glasgow, trying to make a niche for himself in life, while his mother is battling depression and alcoholism after her being abandoned by the man she abandoned Shuggie’s father for. Douglas Stuart is the fifth in the Booker’s history to win the prize for a debut novel, the last was the American George Saunders with Lincoln in the Bardo in 2017. The book is well-deserving of its praise, however, with its fresh and uncompromising voice, as well as a daring dive into the lowest depths of what human society is capable of inflicting on the individuals it surrounds.

Barack Obama: A Promised Land

A book former President Barack Obama could not have written before his term in office had been up for several years – not only because it reflects upon his presidency with a clarity and insight only achievable after several years of introspection, but because it shares details both personal and professional with the general public that would have been unsafe to be disclosed by someone still dependent on the public’s opinion. Recounting his struggles and victories, all the way from his first political aspirations to the Oval Office, Obama provides unique insight into the tumultuous life and inner workings of American high politics, and does so with candidness and wit.

Barack Obamát 12 évvel ezelőtt választották meg az USA 44. elnökévé, és nyolc éven, két elnöki turnuson át számított a nyugati világ vezetőjének. Elnöki memoárjának első részében kendőzetlen őszinteséggel, hibáit és balfogásait, személyes küzdelmeit és csalódásait sem elhallgatva számol be arról a hosszú és rögös útról, ami politikai aspirációinak ébredésétől az Ovális Iroda székéig vezették. Ez a részletes, humoros és jó ütemérzékkel szerkesztett könyv az amerikai demokráciához intézett szerelmes levél, ami egyszerre szól a felesége és a gyermekei iránt érzett felelősség kellemes terheiről is.

J.K. Rowling: The Ickabog

Even after having wrapped the most successful book series of all time in 2007, J. K. Rowling refused to sit idly by. She continued to publish works complementing the vast Harry Potter-universe, as well as fiction for adults, most notably The Casual Vacancy and the Cormorant Strike-series. The outbreak of the coronavirus-pandemic in 2020 encouraged Rowling to dust off an old idea, and after some adjustments made based on feedback from her children, published The Ickabog online for free, in order to help children in quarantine make good use of their days locked in their homes. The author’s storytelling abilities have not diminished over the years, the tale of the magical kingdom of Cornucopia, and the mysterious monster lurking over its northern borders will enthrall the new generation of her fans as well as those who grew up on her earlier works.
