There is a growing trend in fiction, particularly in the young adult genre, dealing with topics previously deemed too heavy and obscure to be fit for books that are supposed to be „light reading”. Mental illness, particularly depression, is such a topic. It’s not that more people suffer from depression than previously. It’s just that a growing number of fiction writers recognised that they are able to explicitly show their readers living under the shadow of mental illnesses that they are not alone. While most of her work could be labelled as romantic fiction, every now and then she veers away from the genre, which seems inevitable – if you are writing three books a year, you need to break patterns from time to time. This 2019 psychological crime story revolves around Zoe, who has a loving husband, a baby girl and a steady job. But it turns out that the traumas of her childhood, despite her efforts to make them, are not willing to stay in the past.

Kevin Kwan found a niche in popular literature when he brought western readers’ attention to the strangely secluded yet fascinating world of the South East Asian ruling class, their peculiar tastes, hobbies and mannerisms that had so far been the subject of much less scrutiny than their American and European counterparts’. Critics and fans of Kwan’s newest book have both pointed out its similarity to the author’s Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. And while it is true that Sex and Vanity shows striking similarities to its predecessors in character development, plot and pacing, who could argue that it’s just as fun to take a dive into a swimming pool full of champagne for the fourth time as it was for the first three?

Louisa May Alcott: Little Women
The 2019 film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic was a great opportunity for those who might have missed this everlasting novel in their teens to make up for their oversight. One benefit of big-budget Hollywood productions is definitely the fact that they can make people discover and rediscover stories that, without help, may have found it more more difficult to reach contemporary audiences. This 1868 novel, which is its author’s semi-autobiographic magnum opus, deserves to remain in the centre of attention, as it covers such topics as artistic freedom, the need for self-realisation, bereavement, the cost of war on a country and on families, and cultural differences between the United States and Europe.
