Heather Morris: Cilka’s Journey

To say that following up The Tattooist of Auschwitz with a sequel is a challenging task would be an understatement. The heart-wrenching account of the mind-numbing destruction human beings are capable of inflicting upon each other is expanded in Cilka’s Journey, an even more nuanced and enlightening book than its predecessor. The titular character is thinking back on the terror inflicted on her in Auschwitz, thinking back on those days that proved only to be the prelude to hell. After her „liberation” from the nazi death camp where she had been raped, she was accused by the Russian authorities of having „lain with the enemy”, and was sent to spend 15 years in a Siberian labour camp. Cilka Klein’s courage and her superhuman ability to see the stars even in the darkest of nights makes this novel a beautiful ode to mankind’s best and worst qualities at the same time.

Susan Orlean: The Library Book

Havens of information, where the accumulated knowledge and wisdom of humanity is freely accessible to anyone, libraries are the symbols of those attributes that are the best in us: the ability to learn, grow and share, so that others can also benefit from our efforts. Susan Orlean’s book is a love letter to libraries, the starting point of which is a tragedy: the fire that destroyed more than 400.000 volumes in the Los Angeles Public Library in April 1986. While detailing the circumstances of the event, and enumerating the superhuman efforts to save as much of the invaluable treasures contained within the building as possible, the author also pays tribute to the important role libraries play in our collective culture.

Rainbow Rowell: Wayward Son

The second installment of the Simon Snow series is just as spectacular as its first book, Carry On was three years ago. Simon, Penny and Baz embark on a brand new adventure which quickly turns into a road book filled with fanciful monsters and a lot of romance, spiced with a daring touch of metafiction. The author does not shy away from admitting the book’s strong dependence on the Harry Potter series, and even brings into play J. K. Rowling’s fictional world to help establish and corroborate her own.

Ann Napolitano: Dear Edward

A 12-year-old boy is the sole survivor of a catastrophe when his plane crashes in a Colorado field. Not only does he have to bear the burden of being the only one left alive, but the death of his entire family as well. Soon he discovers, hidden in his uncle’s garage, the letters sent to him by the relatives of other victims of the crash, and reading them helps him realise how precious his life is. The book follows Edward on his journey of healing and self-discovery, in a style that, despite its subject matter, successfully avoids the pitfalls of melodrama and pity-mongering, and treats its subject matter with empathy and realism.

Margaret Atwood: The Testaments

Fifteen years is a long time in a tyranny. Both for the downtrodden masses, for having to endure oppression this long, and for the ruling elite, as it is long enough to become paranoid and to be in a constant state of fear for the power they hold. Fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, a daring attempt to bring down the oppressive regime of Gilead is unfolding, and we are treated to its chronicle through the eyes of three separate, and very different narrators. As a masterstroke, Atwood manages to make this a sequel to both the book and the TV versions of The Handmaid’s Tale. She chooses to take into account what has and has not been covered in the TV adaptation of her story, allowing fans of either versions to immerse themselves once again in this thrilling dystopia.
